Abstract

Smoking is considered to be an important risk factor to periodontal and peri-implant diseases. Smokers present increased odds of presenting tooth loss and implant loss / failure, which may negatively impact oral health-related quality of life. Thus, this study aims to assess the impact of smoking cessation on the oral health-related quality of life of smokers who will receive osseointegrated dental implants. All study participants will receive smoking cessation therapy and rehabilitation with osseointegrated dental implants. After placement of the prosthetic crown, subjects will be followed-up for 06 months. Clinical outcomes of peri-implant tissues will be assessed at baseline and after 06 months. OHIP-14, an instrument that evaluates oral health-related quality of life, will be applied at baseline and after 06 months. Exposure to tobacco will be assessed by means of measurement of expired carbon monoxide levels, with a monoximeter. Quitters (Q) will be compared with participants that will not be able to quit smoking (NQ) as regards clinical outcomes and mean OHIP=14 scores.
