Abstract

Obesity is characterized by an increase in excessive weight accompanied by an increase in the rate of body fat. Currently, obesity is considered a global epidemic, according to the world health organization. In addition, along with the increase in the rate of obesity in the world, there is also an increase in cases of diseases associated with the obese condition. These comorbidities can affect several organs and systems of the human body, with emphasis on liver diseases such as milder forms of liver steatosis or the most severe forms that can progress to steatohepatitis, liver fibrosis, liver cirrhosis and even lead to development of a hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Thus, the most efficient method of combating morbid obesity is bariatric surgery with the aim of leading to weight reduction. In this work, the objective is to characterize the presence of liver disease in obese patients who have undergone gastroplasty. To this end, laboratory findings and histological results of liver biopsies from patients who underwent gastroplasty will be analyzed and described. A retrospective analysis of the medical records of patients who underwent gastroplasty will be performed with a focus on the following clinical factors: glycated hemoglobin, insulinemia, triglycerides, cholesterol, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), alkaline phosphatase, gamma-glutamyl transferase and bilirubin. The anatomopathological results of liver biopsies will be analyzed using the histopathological score recommended by the Brazilian Society of Pathology. This study will enable a better characterization of liver disease among the population of obese patients, for whom bariatric surgery is indicated.
