Abstract

The use of live animals for educational purposes is an old practice that is still used in educational and research institutions. However, there are several objections to the use of this method, whether for ethical or even humanitarian reasons. The present work aims to analyze the viability of swine small intestine and urinary vesicle fixed in 99.8% ethyl alcohol (99.8% EA), preserved in 30% hypertonic sodium chloride aqueous solution (SHCS 30 ) and vacuum packed and kept at room temperature and under cooling as an alternative method for teaching operative techniques. Preservation methods are expected to maintain the morphological and organoleptic characteristics of the viscera so that they can be used to train operative techniques of the veterinary medicine course without prejudice to the undergraduate teaching-learning process.
