Abstract

The concept of freedom is of great importance already in the Critique of Pure Reason with its role in the third antinomy. Despite its importance, this concept is shrouded in a central problem that endangers the very coherence of the Kantian doctrine of freedom within the first Critique. The problem lies in knowing how the cosmological concept and the practical concept of freedom are related to each other both in formulating the antinomic problem and in solving it. Would the practical concept of freedom depend on the cosmological or transcendental concept? At least the Canon of the first Critique seems to suggest that the practical concept is independent of the transcendental concept of freedom. Thus, how is it possible to understand the passage from the cosmological concept of freedom to the practical concept, both within the third antinomy and in the Canon of the first Critique?
