Abstract

Compounds based on Ti3+ are of contemporary interest of the Condensed Matter Physics, because these ions have only a electron in the 3d shell, thus presenting an active orbital degree of freedom that may lead to non-trivial electronic ground states. This project consists on the synthesis and investigation of the ternary componds LaTiO3+d with different oxygen concentrations (0<=d<=0.5). The synthesis will be done by means of solid state reaction in controlled atmosphere, and the characterization will be performed through X-ray diffraction, magnetization and Ramam spectroscopy measurements. The successful synthesis of these materials and their characterization, besides bringing the student into contact with many experimental techniques and a scientifically relevant system in our area, may be the embryo of a subsequent graduate project involving a systematic study of titanates and their structural and electronic properties.
