Abstract

The present research work aims to deepen the analysis of female representation in the portrait paintings field, having the painting The Amazon as the object of study, which was painted by French artist Edouard Manet around 1870 and 1875.This work is part of a collective effort of other researchers from the Architecture and Urbanism College of the University of São Paulo, who are prompted to interpret some of the female portraits kept at the Art Museum of São Paulo (MASP), and individually it concerns the Symbolic Revolution given by Bourdieu to Manet. It recognizes that the artist's revolutionary nature carries an array of social traces, which, assembled together, make a meaningful reading for the understanding of gender relations in the time period they belong to. The research intends to combine the opinions of authors who analyze the French society from the XIX century with publications regarding Manet and the aforementioned portrait, in order to demonstrate the connection between specific aspects of this painting and social matters from its time period.
