Abstract

The occurrence of nosocomial infections in veterinary medicine has become more important, as it has serious consequences for both the patient and the owners, besides being an imminent concern in health public health. In the skin and mucous membranes reside microorganisms which can become pathogenic in certain situations. Thus, hands are used as one of the most important vehicles and sources of contamination within a operating room. Therefore, the objective of this study is based on the evaluate the effectiveness of hand disinination with the use of alcohol-based gel (Alcohol Hand Gel, Softalind ViscoRub®) and the susceptibility of bacterial isolates found in the hospital surgical environment, compared to the main antimicrobial agents used routinely. For this, samples will be collected from vet surgeons' hands before and after gel antisepsis and during two hours of surgical procedure. The samples will be subjected to microbiological counting, morphological and biochemical tests and, subsequently, the antibiotic susceptibility test (antibiogram). The results obtained will be compared with previous studies conducted at the same local, where effectiveness was assessed of hand disinination with 2% chlorhexidine and povidine iodine , two of the most common antiseptics in the veterinary routine. It's expected that with these results and comparison with other studies, it will be possible to find the best form or method and active principle for hand antisepsis, preventing nosocomial infections more effectively.
