Abstract

What exactly is the overcoming of the hyper-individualism in Carlos Drummond de Andrade's first two books about? What was in Alguma poesia (1930) and Brejo das almas (1934) that was composed and organized in such a way that overcame the contradictions that they, the books themselves, set up? What should one think about the resolution of those contractions - despite it is "only elementary" - present in the book the critics have classified as the first of the participant phase of the poet? In what way could one link the impasses found in the poetic form to the issues of the self''s inner life, class struggle or politics? In what way did those impasses guide Drummond's poetry along its particular path? By examining the love lyric of the Drummond's early books, this work intends to provide some answers to these questions. The analysis of poems makes it possible to understand how the poet embodied a model of subjectivity, which is at the same time individualistic and self-critic. Such model abandoned the resignation to the individual and tried to achieve experiences of otherness. This change of attitudes is due to the acknowledgement of the class origins of the poet and due to a progressive awareness making of a social disaggregation state.
