Abstract

It is estimated that approximately 1.5 billion people worldwide suffer with some kind of disorder of the Central Nervous System (CNS). Therefore, there is a high demand for effective treatments. Due to an increase in the number of elderly in the world population, if there is an increase or improvement of existing treatments, the number of people with diseases of the CNS will be approximately 1.9 billion by 2020. Among the major CNS diseases are solid tumors, Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA) and Vasospasm of Cerebral Arteries. Among the tumors that affect the CNS, Glioma is the most aggressive and frequent accounting for 50% of all tumors with survival less than one year. Other serious problems are Called Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA), which is the second leading cause of death in Brazil and Vasospasm of Cerebral Arteries, resulting from subarachnoid hemorrhage. All currently existing treatments for brain affections reported here are not very effective, resulting in a large number of patients with serious neurological damage or death. Therefore, the need to develop a more effective therapy. This project is divided into 5 sub-projects, three related to Glioma, one related to stroke and another related to vasospasm of cerebral arteries. Thus, the studies proposed in this project seem very relevant, since the use of new technologies, on a theme already explored, but with little success, seems to be the key to the discovery of new therapeutic strategies. Therefore, the common guideline that unites all proposals is the combination of nanotechnology, fotoprocesso and cell therapy for the treatment of CNS diseases. (AU)
