Abstract

The indiscriminate and excessive use of antimicrobials has contributed to the development and spread of resistant microorganisms, which can endanger the health of the global population in the medium to long term. Despite the recommendations of the World Health Organization on the restricted and conscious use of antimicrobials due to Antimicrobial Resistance, Dentistry continues to increasingly use antimicrobials, either by dentists trained in developing countries, such as Brazil, or developed ones, such as Norway. Decisions about the use of antimicrobials by the dentist are based on the knowledge acquired during the undergraduate course. Therefore, the objective of this study will be to evaluate knowledge about the use of antimicrobials and bacterial resistance by dental students from Brazil and Norway. A cross-sectional study will be developed through the application of a questionnaire with the objective of evaluating the knowledge about the use of antimicrobials and bacterial resistance by dental students from the Faculty of Dentistry of Piracicaba, University of Campinas, Brazil, and the Faculty of Dentistry at the University of Oslo, Norway. Prior to the application of the questionnaire, the study will be submitted to the research ethics committee of both institutions. The project will be developed in international collaboration with researchers from the University of Oslo, Profa. Dra. Fernanda Petersen and Prof. Dr. Roger Junges. The Brazilian team, composed by the Scientific Initiation student, Dalton Marques, and his advisor, Prof. Dr. Antônio Pedro Ricomini Filho, will work jointly with the Norwegian team in the process of preparing and validating the questionnaire, with each team being responsible for applying the questionnaires in each Faculty of Dentistry. The results obtained will be tabulated and subjected to statistical tests (± = 5%). In addition, the syllabus content of both Dentistry courses will be assessed regarding knowledge about the use of antimicrobials and bacterial resistance.
