Abstract

The definition of research objects, understanding it in its process throughout a study, is a privileged field to push the theoretical limits of dichotomies between nature and culture, reality and representation, or even female and male. In this context, instigated by reflections from Bruno Latour and Donna Haraway, primatology emerges as a particularly interesting scientific knowledge in view of one of its protagonists: the primates. So, the objective of this research is to carry out an ethnography of the primatological field to understand how the knowledges and objects of study in this discipline are constructed, defined and eventually transformed. For this endeavor, the group of primatologists from the University of São Paulo was chosen for the Postgraduate Program in Experimental Psychology - one of the institutions that most concentrate theses and dissertations on the subject of primates. The purpose of this ethnography is to accompany researchers - or to follow, as they do with non-human primates - in their publications, meetings at the university, the moment of preparing to go to the field, the observation of monkeys , and the return to the university. Along this path, Jeanne Favret-Saada's idea about being affected will be central, aiming to produce situated knowledge and implicated ethically and politically, and thinking about ideas formulated by authors such as Marilyn Strathern and Annemarie Mol.
