Abstract

Epilepsy is a chronic neurological condition characterized by recurrent epileptic seizures (ES), caused by excessive neuronal activity in the brain, usually self-limited. Epilepsies have different etiologies and present different types of ES and their evolution that can compromise the quality of life (QOL) of patients. Objective: To evaluate the occurrence of accidents and injuries during ES in adult patients with epilepsy (PWEs) and relate to clinical, cognitive and QOL aspects. The presence of accidents/injuries will be compared to that of a similar control group. Patients and procedures: Eighty patients over the age of 18, with a diagnosis of epilepsy, being treated at the Clinical Neurology outpatient clinic of the Celso Pierro Hospital and Maternity (PUC-Campinas), will be evaluated. The PWEs will be evaluated through anamnesis, a specific questionnaire of accidents and injuries associated with ES, a clinical-neurological examination, a Mini-mental state examination, a Brief cognitive battery, the Liverpool adverse events profile and the Quality of life in epilepsy inventory -31 (QOLIE- 31). A similar control group (CG) with 30 individuals will be composed. Accident and injury data between the PWEs and the CG will be compared. The relationship between the clinical, cognitive aspects and the perception of QOL with the occurrence of accidents and injuries will be studied, using statistical tests with a significance level of p<0.05. Expected results: In this study, the researchers sought to study and correlate clinical and psychosocial aspects with the QOL and the occurrence of accidents and injuries in PWEs who live among us. It is also expected, when evaluating the correlations between clinical and psychosocial aspects, to better understand the neuro-psychophysiopathological mechanisms and to the better adaptation of the individual in the community, with a significant reduction in costs to the health care system and, consequently, a greater chance of social inclusion of the PWE. Another relevant objective was to contribute with relevant scientific data on the subject.
