Abstract

This research project aims to study the following short stories of the Brazilian writer João Guimarães Rosa: As margens da alegria, Os cimos, Famigerado, Sorôco, sua mãe, sua filha e Os irmãos Dagobé, all belonging to the book Primeiras Estórias, 1962. The analysis will take place about the figurations of modernity in the space of the Rosa's backlands, in order to understand how the shock and the transition between the archaic and the modern occurs in the narratives of Primeiras Estórias, written during a period of great progressive development in Brazil. Thus, we will use the work of Guimarães Rosa, his critical fortune and extraliterary theoretical texts that may support the study of this very important piece of the author's work.
