Abstract

Persistent scintillator materials can emit light during many hours after ceased X-ray irradiation. These materials are normally inorganic hosts doped with activator ions. It is also possible to associate it to photosensitizers capable to absorb the excitation source energy and transfer to the activator ion, promoting its radiative decay. Nowadays, facing the need of biological applications, it is very promising the combination of nanosized scintillators with photosensitizer dyes, allowing medical applications, specially photodynamic therapy. However, nanoscintillator materials demand new challenging synthesis conditions and show different luminescence properties due to their small size. Besides, the excitation of persistent luminescence materials with X-rays is barely studied needing new researches, specially about their synthesis and electronic properties. This project seeks the synthesis of persistent luminescence nanomaterials, its optimization (in terms of light emission) and surface modification, allowing X-ray excitation to several possible applications.
