Abstract

In this project we propose the study of the maximal efficiency and its attainability in multiterminal machines (machines that have more than one input and one more than one output) when not all degrees of freedom are available. We employ the formalism of the effective thermodynamic theory developed by Polettini and Esposito. We intend to apply the main results to the study of the efficiency of the stochastic pump as a heat engine, two coupled quantum dots in contact with a dissipative bath of phonons or photons and to other example systems (e.g. ADP to ATP synthesis in large metabolic cycles).Existence of a physical rationale behind the effective efficiency resides on the possibility to give a physical interpretation to time-reversed dynamics, an extremely simple and fundamental question in stochastic thermodynamics that surprisingly has never been addressed. As a possible spin-off project we will explore this question and its possible ramifications.
