Abstract

Different meta-analyzes summarize and indicate that medical students have greater symptoms of anxiety and depression than the general population (Cuttilan, Sayampanathan, & Ho, 2016; Lei, Xiao, Liu, & Li, 2016; Mayer et al., 2016 ; Puthran, Zhang, Tam, & Ho, 2016; Rotenstein et al., 2016). Meta-analysis with data from Brazilian students is also available (Pacheco et al., 2017), which allows us to point out that this is a worldwide problem. Physical activity can decrease the depressive symptoms of medical students by approximately 8% for each additional hour of physical activity (PA) performed per week, which indicates that the lack of PA can directly affect the mental health of the student. Despite the high number of studies addressing symptoms of anxiety and depression in medical students, its relationship with physical activity and sedentary behavior still needs studies, especially with a Brazilian sample. Thus, it is reasonable to suggest that medical students who have worsened mental health may have this condition influenced by the low PA performed. This study, using questionnaires to assess anxiety and depressive symptoms (Beck anxiety and Beck depression) and physical activity level (IPAQ), aims to verify whether students with higher scores on the anxiety and depressive symptom scales, will present a worse level of physical activity.
