Abstract

Research and development of new biocatalysts are imperative for the establishment of sustainable industrial processes; however, the limited toolbox for reliable genetic manipulation of non-conventional microbial hosts is still a limiting factor for the industrial employment of microorganisms with great biotechnological potential. Recent advances in sequencing and data analysis technologies have become a valuable source of biological information, and, thus, a wide range of new genes and biological functions from uncultivable bacteria are provided for synthetic biologists and metabolic engineers to explore. This project aims to utilize biological data mining to unearth new tools for genetic manipulation of Pseudomonas putida, a Gram-negative bacteria with emerging industrial properties, as well as new genes able to confer greater robustness for microorganisms grown under the extreme conditions needed in industrial fermentation processes, allowing the development of novel biocatalysts suitable for ventures aiming the expansion of life's boundaries.
