Abstract

In the last decades, a considerable advance in new technological alternatives for the recovery of phosphorus (P) via effluents and sewage sludge has been achieved worldwide, some of which are already in the implementation stage on a full scale. However, the misconception that these sources are discharged, variations in the requirements of each country and state, as well as the high compositional variability of effluents, structure and methodology of waste water treatment plants (WWTP) make it impossible to adopt them in the absence of a one-off study. In Brazil, data are still lacking, and no nutrient recovery process is currently used, treatments are still not very efficient, with treated waters still rich in nutrients and the sewage sludge destined for landfills. Based on this, the present proposal aims to improve treatment at the Bela Vista WWTP in the city of Piracicaba/SP in order to reduce the levels of total phosphorus (<0.30 mg/L) and total nitrogen (<11 mg/L) in treated water, enabling the recovery of P (secondarily N) and the development of an auxiliary treatment route that can be applied in other stations. To achieve this objective, the ideal conditions for the operation of two mechanisms will be studied: adsorption and coagulation-flocculation. (AU)
