Effect of Plantago major leaf extract (tanchagem/tansagem) on microorganisms of medical interest

Abstract

Resistance to antimicrobial drugs is a serious public health problem. Microorganisms, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Candida auris, have high rates of resistance to the antimicrobials used to treat infections, which is why it is necessary to develop new drugs. Natural products, including medicinal plants, have been widely studied for the development of drugs for the treatment of various diseases. Plantago major is a plant with several biological properties, including antibacterial, antifungal and healing action. Therefore, our objective is to study the inhibitory effect of the alcoholic extract prepared with the leaves of this species in strains of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa, Candida auris, Pythium insidiosum, Sporotrhix globosa, Sporotrhrix brasiliensis and Sporotrhirx schenkii, using methodologies for determining the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) in addition to checking the inhibitory capacity of biofilm production in S. aureus, P. aeruginosa and C. auris. Tests will also be carried out to determine synergistic interactions of this extract with drugs used to treat diseases caused by these species.
