Abstract

Ethanol is a renewable and clean energy source that became relevant in the world scenario after the first oil shock in 1973. The ethanol market boom can be explained by a series of factors, including economic (e.g., high oil price), industrial (e.g., huge investments in re-newable energy sources) and institutional (e.g., incentive policies). In particular, the role of the institutions (e.g., constitutions, contracts, traditions, moral values, etc.) was notorious in developing processes and implementing strategies that contributed to the market upsurge. Therefore, to better understand the ethanol market behavior and its historical changes it is crucial to monitor and assess these processes and strategies. The objective of this research is to demonstrate how different institutions influenced the ethanol sector at the top-five producer and consumer nations (i.e. Brazil, United States, Argentina, Colombia and India). To address the research need, we will find the relationships between the institutional indicators and the indices of the ethanol market (e.g., number of jobs, gross income, etc.) during the past two decades. The results of this research will contribute to further understand the impact of institutions on the ethanol market, allowing companies to determine or redefine their competitive strategies in a given competitive environment, so that organization will be able to position itself differently or create competitive advantage. Finally, this research will be essential to develop my data analysis skills and my academic training in business.
