Abstract

The diversity of bryophyte sexual systems emerges at the population level as a gradient of separation between female and male gametangios. Two lines of evidence on determinants of the diversity of sexual systems in bryophytes are available. First, by analogy with empirical observations in angiosperms, it is conjectured that the diversity ofsexual systems is correlated with the reproductive investment of these plants. Second, it is assumed that there is an association between magnitude of genetic variability and attributes of sexual systems such as distance between gametangios, probability of mutations and cross-fertilization. We add to these two lines of evidence the conjecture of association between diversity of sexual systems and degrees of thermotolerance in bryophytes, based on empirical information on the occurrence of different sexual systems in the Brazilian phytogeographic domains. I will investigate the correlation between diversity of sexual systems and traits of life history, genetic variability and degrees of thermotolerance using bryophytes of the genus Fissidens as a model system.
