Abstract

Classical myeloproliferative neoplasms (MNPs) are clonal disorders of the hematopoietic stem cell that lead to excessive proliferation of one or more myeloid lineages, causing leukocytosis, increased total erythrocyte mass, and/or thrombocytosis. This classification comprises polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythemia (ET), and primary myelofibrosis (PMF). COVID-19 is a systemic and respiratory infection caused by a beta coronavirus SARS-CoV-2, initially observed in China, December 2019, which rapidly evolved to a global public health concern, declared a pandemic on March 11, 2020, by the World Health Organization (WHO). This study aims to evaluate COVID-19 incidence on classical MPN patients being followed-up at the Centro de Hematologia e Hemoterapia da Unicamp and to gather data regarding its severity, clinical evolution, and determinants in this population, from the hypothesis that MPN epidemiology and pathophysiology make patients more susceptible to hyperinflammatory complications of COVID-19. Such a goal is to be achieved through questionnaire application on an electronic platform, from September 2020 to April 2021 in six-month intervals, to track confirmed and suspected cases of COVID-19, along with documentary analysis of medical records and history of the research participants. The gathered information will be systematized and statistically analyzed. The results may help to develop therapeutic strategies more adequate for the treatment of COVID-19 in this population. (AU)
