Abstract

Research in the area of religiosity as a protective factor for drug use and as a treatment for drug addiction tends to find positive results concerning theistic beliefs. However, such studies have not followed the new directions of research on religiosity, where groups of atheists are added. Objective: To analyze whether and to what extent the strength of theistic and atheistic beliefs can act as a protective or risk factor for the consumption of alcohol and other drugs. With this, we intend to cover questions such as: Would a solid belief system act as a protective or risk factor in the consumption of alcohol and other drugs? Can being affiliated with a theistic or atheistic institution or group act as a protective or risk factor for the consumption of alcohol and other drugs? Would the type of religion or secular belief also influence the pattern of consumption? Methods: It is a quantitative and qualitative research, with people who present different patterns of drug use and different levels of adherence to theistic and atheistic beliefs. The study will be carried out in three stages. The first step will be the translation, adaptation and validation of the Dimensions of Secularity (DoS) scale on atheistic beliefs. The second stage will consist of applying the online survey, which will have validated scales on religiosity, spirituality and substance use, in addition to a sociodemographic questionnaire and the referred instrument to be validated. The third stage will consist of semi-structured interviews with participants in person, in addition to the application of the instruments used in online research. (AU)
