Abstract

The Brazilian sheep production showed significant growth between the years 2008 and 2018, the effective herd increased by 12.7% reaching more than 18.9 million animals in 2018. Despite this, like most sectors belonging to the agricultural sector, there are cost management problems as well as environmental impact. However, based on society's demand and supply, the Neoclassical Economic Theory, still in force, assumes unlimited economic growth in the productive sectors, dictating unrestrained behavior over ecosystems, affecting the resilience of the biosphere. As an alternative, Ecological Economics has as its fundamental principle the recognition of the biophysical limitation of ecosystems, as a primary source in the generation of ecosystem services demanded by society. Thus, the objective of this study is to carry out a comparative analysis of sheep production systems in the State of São Paulo, by calculating the cost of production according to the precepts of Neoclassical Economic Theory, and of the Emerging Synthesis, based on the Theory of Ecological Economics. This analysis intends to offer the State sheep production chain an understanding of the real value provided by the activity's ecosystem services. For this purpose, the panel methodology will be used to define the representative properties that will characterize the creation of lambs in the main regions that make up the State of São Paulo: Araçatuba, Bauru, Campinas, Marília, Presidente Prudente, São José do Rio Preto and Sorocaba. After characterizing the systems, the lamb production cost index in each region will be calculated, the real value of ecosystem services and the environmental performance of the regions. It is expected to generate knowledge about the work carried out by ecosystems in sheep production systems, which will be published periodically through technical and scientific information. (AU)
