Abstract

The present work aims at studying the determinants and effects of Brazilian cotton production development, linking the trajectory of cotton economy during the 1930s and the Second World War to Brazilian industrialization, currency crisis and specific foreign interests, especially from Germany. Given that cotton farming expansion during the coffee crisis made cotton Brazilian's main agricultural product, the proposed study intends to recover the factors that determined cotton growth and clarify the new production's role in a period of major national and international economic changes due to the 1929 crash. Matters of how the cotton development corresponded to the needs of the growing national textile industry, to the urgency of the foreign currency shortage and to the influence of foreign nations interested in the commercialization of the product will be addressed. Thus, through the investigation of the reasons for the flourishing of cotton production and the effects of such growth, the research will analyze how this process is related to the widely studied events of Brazilian industrialization, coffee economy crisis, trade deficit and international war mobilizations related to the Second World War.
