Abstract

Detect structural damages is currently an important challenge to the engineering community. The field of Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) comprises many techniques, mainly non destructive ones, to detect incipient damage and allow to establish maintenance procedures before a failure. In particular, many researches on this topic are based on post processing the input and output signals, measured for a structure in healthy and unknown structural conditions. In other hand, a limited number of works investigates the interaction between the damage and the waves propagating on the structure due to an input applied by an actuator. In this context, this research is focused on studying the interactions between the damage and reflected and transmitted flexural and longitudinal waves propagating in plates with symmetric and asymmetric damages. Stiffened plates is investigated too. The approach involves the state vector notation to write the waves amplitudes in terms of the plate's physical and geometrical properties. The research comprises to determine the optimal frequencies and investigate the influence of physical and geometrical characteristics of damage using piezoelectric transducers as actuators and sensors. Numerical simulations using state vector approach will be compared with experimental results to validate the findings. (AU)
