Systematic of the group of Vellozia luteola (Velloziaceae) from Espinhaço Range and the inselbergs on the eastern coast of Brazil

Abstract

Velloziaceae is a plant family with about 250 species, with predominantly amphiatlantic distribution with most of them occurring in South America. In Brazil, Velloziaceae inhabit mostly the campos rupestres regions with high endemism levels, at these environments, the family species are the main elements of rock outcrops. The family has five genera that exhibit the following relationship: (Acanthochlamys (Xerophyta (Barbacenia (Barbaceniopsis, Vellozia)))). Vellozia presents several informal groups, such as the group of Vellozia luteola, which actually has three species. However, there are about six species that share the sinapomorfies of the group of Vellozia luteola, with a total of nine species. From this total, seven are not officially described and are distributed in both the campos rupestres from the north of Espinhaço Chain and the Inselbergs from the south center of Bahia state. The main goal of this project is to study the systematics of the group of V. luteola. Then, three new species will be officially described; a taxonomic treatment for these species will be produced, including descriptions, key, maps, conservation status, and phylogenetic analysis of the group and; an update of the identification key of the Velloziaceae from the Grão-Mogol region. The results of this project will be published in national and international scientific journals. (AU)
