Abstract

The event horizons of black hole are highly non-local structures, defined from global space-time causality. Alternative horizon characterizations, with local structure and based on foliation of trapping surfaces, are often used in mathematical relativity, numerical relativity and alternative theories of gravitation. These characterizations are closely related to expansion of null surfaces. In this project we will start from the classic definition of black holes and investigate its extent by applying some of the most recent proposals for characterizing horizons, including asymptotically AdS space-time solutions.
