Abstract

The number of elderly people in Brazil and in the world has been increasing every year. Concomitant with the growing number of elderly people, the occurrence of chronic non-communicable diseases has led the elderly to dependence on a caregiver. The caregiver has an important role in the health-disease dyad. However, the care process, in addition to other responsibilities, can generate burden on the caregiver. Factors such as functionality of the elderly and the severity of the condition are associated with this consequence of care. Another variable that may be related to burden is empathy. Recent studies have shown that the high levels of empathy, especially in the affective domain, can be directly related to burden. The main objective of this research is to analyze the effect of an empathy training on the burden levels of caregivers for the elderly. This is a randomized controlled clinical study, divided into two groups: intervention (IG) and control (CG). The IG will undergo a training of five meetings with a total duration of 10 hours regarding empathic ability through videos, lectures, simulation and others. The GC will participate in five meetings on topics related to health in general. A structured questionnaire will be applied to characterize the sociodemographic profile of caregivers and the following instruments, before and after training: Multidimensional Scale of Interpersonal Reactivity (MSIR), Zarit Burden Inventory (ZBI), Care Burden Inventory (CBI), Patient Health Questionnaire (PHQ-9), Neuropsychiatric Inventory (NPI) and Self-Report Questionnaire (SRQ-20). It is estimated that 36 elderly caregivers for this study. (AU)
