Abstract

Global environmental changes resulting from human activities affect societies unequally, so it is necessary to analyze opportunities and threats of adaptation strategies accordingly. The sudden socioeconomic changes that China underwent in the 20th century led to many environmental challenges, to which its political leadership responded with the "Construction of an Ecological Civilization". The framework guides China's approach to the integration of development and ecological management. Ecological compensations as tools for mitigation and finance open innovative approaches to integrating conservation and urban development of China's rapidly growing cities. However, without considering variables of the Chinese modernization process, this phenomenon cannot be understood. Using an environmental sociology approach, this research proposes an analysis of multi-level actors in periurban eco-compensation arrangements in the provincial-status municipality of Chongqing, Western China, through the Ecological Modernization and Risk Society theories. The BEPE visiting research period (March 2021 - March 2022) will help to consolidate the methodological approach and apply first analyses under the guidance of Prof. Zhu and the Environmental Policy Group in Wageningen. The two resulting articles, one on the Ecological Civilization framework and another about eco-compensations in Chongqing are going to be published in Environmental Sociology and Ecology & Society.
