Abstract

This project aims to investigate the connection between emotion and bad faith in the work of Jean-Paul Sartre. In Sketch for a Theory of the Emotions (1939), the author defines emotion as a magical conduct that transforms the world with the aim of solving unresolved situations. In Being and Nothingness (1943), bad faith is defined as a project that, through the constitution of the subject as an object, seeks to escape from the responsibility revealed by the disclosure of freedom as human essence. Given the conceptual path that leads to the connection between the two conducts, we intend to investigate how emotion is instrumentalized by the project of bad faith. Our study will bring light to the transition from the phenomenological psychology to the phenomenological ontology in Sartre's work, a transition that results from the necessity for a structural investigation of consciousness. Following this logic, we seek to demonstrate how the conception of bad faith is essential for a satisfactory understanding of emotional conduct. (AU)
