Abstract

In recent decades, Brazilian banking and credit historiography about the 19th and 20th century has contributed to rigorous and fundamental studies. It is important to continue advancing these studies, especially in the area least affected by this field - the profile and socioeconomic behavior of bank customers. This is precisely what the present project seeks to advance, through the analysis of a sample of checking accounts of savings accounts of Caixa Econômica da Capital Federal throughout the First Brazilian Republic. Through this unprecedented handwritten documentation, we will seek to develop a database with about 6,000 savings accounts, which will allow us to understand the segments that saved the most, such as gender, profession and residence, and how they used their savings accounts, the frequency of withdrawals and deposits. Furthermore, this project, focused on the largest savings bank in Brazil, contributes to the analysis of the distribution of capital and its control by the population of Rio de Janeiro in a context of accelerated urban expansion at the turn of the 19th to the 20th century.
