Abstract

Gastric Cancer (GC) is the 5th most common cancer in the world with an estimated incidence of 21,230 new cases in 2020 in Brazil. Adenocarcinoma is the most common histological type of GC and its diagnosis is made by means of upper gastrointestinal endoscopy (EDA), followed by staging by the TNM classification. In addition, laparoscopy can be adopted because it has greater accuracy in detecting metastases, which determines a change in treatment and is able to identify patients at high risk of recurrence, associated with lower survival rates. The most commonly adopted treatment is total or partial gastrectomy with D1 or D2 lymphadenectomy. Because hematological recurrence is the second most frequent cause of failure in the treatment of GC, the detection of free circulating tumor cells (CTLC) in peripheral blood, using the RT-PCR method, can be a relevant tool to predict the recurrence of metastases and determining the patient's prognosis. However, no consensus has been reached regarding the correlation between the presence of CTLC in peripheral blood and its impact on patient survival. In this context, the present study aims to evaluate the presence of CTLC, using the qRT-PCR technique with the use of CK20, TFF1, and MUC1 markers in peripheral blood samples from patients with GC, in addition to verifying the association of the presence of CTLC with clinicopathological parameters, recurrence, and overall patient survival.
