Abstract This project revisits the wind-driven coastal upwelling system off Cape Frio (23 S) by applying concepts of frontal dynamics. The front established during mature upwelling events is theoretically susceptible to develop submesoscale instabilities. Moreover, a curved geometry found in previous efforts should also have dynamical implications. This proposal aims to investigate the destabilization process of the upwelling front in mesoscale and submesoscale, exploring the possible effects of a curved geometry in the front dynamics. We intend to understand the physical mechanisms by which the newly-upwelled waters can be transported offshore, perhaps reaching the Brazil Current domain and fertilizing the open ocean. (AU) | |
