Abstract

The project analyzes the relations of the Portuguese noble elite and colonial administration from the conflict among the heirs of Martim Afonso and Pero Lopes de Sousa for the captaincies of São Vicente and Santo Amaro. The hybrid aspect of these characters is situated between the Ancien Régime values and the colonial's trades ones. In the period chosen, from 1679 to 1724, there is the discovering of gold mines and great transformations of Empire, the purchase of São Vicente captaincy by D. João V in 1709 and, furthermore, allows us to analyze the confluence of regal and local elites interests which suppressed the donatário. (AU)
