Abstract

This work aims to investigate and analyze how the social and religious transformations of the second half of the 17th century influenced musical productions in Austria during Leopold Is reign (1658-1705). The chosen period for the the present work is related to the fact that Leopold I was responsible for promoting Austria to a important musical center, which was connected not only to the political and economic circumstances of his reign, but also to his Jesuit education. In this way, the repertoire produced in this period will be evaluated based on its own assumptions, establishing a broad overview of the particularities of music development in Austria at the end of the 17th century, under Leopold Is reign. To achieve this purpose, the political and socio-cultural conditions that contributed to define this musical production will be discussed; the role of the Society of Jesus in education and music production; the specificities of Austrian Catholic music in relation to German Lutheran music; and the role of Leopold I in the realization of Jesuit educational ideals.
