Abstract

This research project aims to pursue my ongoing research on the present tense analyticization in Brazilian Portuguese, a change from the synthetic eu faço ('I do') to the analytic eu estou fazendo ('I am doing'), under a Parameter Hierarchy-based approach. I intend to refine and deepen my analysis already under development in Brazil, especially concerning the morphosyntax of the language, which from the point of view of syntactic theory has not yet received an in-depth analysis in the literature. I believe that the gains from the exchange will be very significant since the University of Cambridge currently leads several of the research groups investigating the Parameter Hierarchy approach in different languages, conducted by the pioneer linguists that have proposed this theory. In addition, the research will be supervised by Dr Adam Ledgeway, a leading expert with extensive knowledge and scientific production on analyticity and syntheticity in Romance languages. (AU)
