Influence of movement on tissue pressure with different types of functional compressive bandaging: a randomized, blind and crossover clinical trial

Abstract

Compression of the limb affected by lymphedema is considered the best treatment to control the dysfunction, and the tissue pressure exerted is essential for obtaining satisfactory results, and for that, the associated movement is extremely important. The objective of the study is to evaluate the efficiency of different functional compression bandaging (FCB) techniques at rest and the movement of the upper limb affected by lymphedema secondary to the treatment of breast cancer. This is a blind randomized clinical trial, with a crossover design, in which 18 volunteers will be evaluated, aged from 21 to 80 years, affected by unilateral lymphedema and secondary to the treatment of breast cancer. FCB pressure will be assessed by manometry and blood flow by Doppler ultrasound in conditions of rest and movement, through a random application of the spiral and eight bandaging techniques, with a washout period of seven days between interventions. The movement will be assessed through the activity of the limb involved in the upper limp functionality of the Jebsen-Taylor Hand Function Test. The Shapiro-Wilk test will be applied for data analysis and consistent statistical tests will be performed for appropriate comparisons between groups, with a statistical significance level of 5%.
