Abstract

This project aims to investigate the creative process of techno and trance music, two strands of electronic music, from composition within the studio to appreciation in the festive environment, highlighting the points of contact and distance between both genres in Brazil. Despite the use of instruments and equipment in common, both in composition and in presentation, techno and trance find their expression and fruition through distinct elements, present in the choice of sounds and arrangements of songs, DJ sets, location and decoration of parties, costumers etc. In order to synthesize this arrangement of components and elements that integrate and differentiate techno and trance scenes, I use the concepts of locality, by Appadurai (1996), musicking, by Small (1998) and acustemology, by Feld (2000). In this sense, through conversations with music producers, DJs and event organizers, and participation in their respective activities, I seek to understand how the social relations that constitute techno and trance scenarios are articulated with the creative process of musical composition.(AU)
