Abstract

Craniomaxillofacial traumas with severe loss of bone mass may require grafts. Among the alternatives, there are biomaterials, which can act as scaffolds for the cell growth needed in the formation of new tissue. Collagen and elastin polymers are a good alternative for being able to mimic bone tissue. In addition, its properties can be improved through the use of polysaccharides like chitosan and bioactive compounds such as Jatobá resin and pomegranate extract for their antigenic actions. Thus, the aim of this research will be to evaluate bone neoformation in defects experimentally performed in the mandible of rats through the use of scaffolds in the form of biopolymeric membranes containing the aforementioned substances. For this, 30 male Wistar rats will be used. They will be anesthetized and submitted to the surgical procedure for the creation of a defect in the right branch of the mandible. The animals will be divided into group 1, whose bone injury will be empty, group 2, where the defect will be grafted collagen/chitosan/resin, and group 3, whose injury will be filled with collagen/elastin/pomegranate scaffold. After 6 weeks of surgery, the animals will be euthanized and samples from the surgical area will be removed and submitted to macroscopic, imaging, histological and morphometric analysis of the newly formed bone tissue in the operated area. The percentage data of the bone volume formed will be submitted to statistical analysis with Bio Estat 5.3 software, applying the ANOVA and Tukey tests with a significance level of p<0.05. (AU)
