Abstract

Low-temperature thermochronology comprehends a set of radioisotopic dating techniques widely used in geosciences to understand the timing and rates of processes operating at shallow depths in the Earth, at temperatures lower than ~300°C. Inherent to the relatively low temperature required to disturb and reset thermochronometric radioisotopic systems, these techniques have flourished in a wide spectrum of geological applications in which the mechanisms of cooling of rocks can be inferred. Examples of such applications include magmatic cooling, tectonic or erosional exhumation, landscape development by fluvial incision or glacial erosion, mineralizations emplacement, studies of the age of fault movements, among others. The aim of the Scientific Initiation scholarship is to train students in various aspects of low-temperature thermochronometry, including theoretical fundaments, sample preparation, apatite-fission-track analyses, and modeling and interpretation of thermochronometic data.
