Abstract

Mechanical vibration can lead to several problems that can be dealt with via a proper design. Additive manufacturing can be used in the design of lightweight complex structures, but the additive manufacturing can yield substantial variability, especially in the mechanical properties. Statistical tools can be used to quantify uncertainty related to additive manufacturing and infer its influence in the vibration and noise responses. Using appropriate prior distributions, Bayesian statistics can be more precise, and the expansion optimal linear estimator can be used to model the spatial correlation of the mechanical properties. Robust optimization can be used to design a geometry that is robust with respect to the manufacturing variability. The spectral element method combined with the wave finite element method can be used to efficiently compute the wavenumber values, which can give information about the wave attenuation, using only one unit cell of a periodic structure. The objective of the current proposal is to design a 3D frame structure that works as a passive vibration isolation device that is robust against mechanical property variability and geometric defects using the previously mentioned methodologies and to validate the design with experiments.
