Abstract

Phononic crystals and metamaterials are artificial and periodic structures that have potential for applications in the industry, for example, as vibrations and noise isolation and attenuation. These effects can be obtained via local resonance, stop band phenomena (band gaps), or as results of topological modes, such as interface modes and edge modes. Traditionally, deterministic models are used to describe such phenomena. However, variations in the material properties, or in the structure dimensions, can generate uncertainties in these wave propagation phenomena that may be beneficial or disadvantageous to vibration and noise attenuation. These studies will be carried out for uniform and periodic one-dimensional structures (rods and beams) and two-dimensional (plain and composite flat plates). The modeling methods used for simple structures will be: the spectral element (SEM) and state space method using an impedance formulation in the form of one Riccati equation (SSR), and the wave expansion methods (PWE); and wave finite elements (WFE) for complex structures.Bayesian statistics will be used to quantify the uncertainties regarding band gap phenomena and topological modes in uniform waveguides, phononic crystals and metamaterials. Statistical theories will be incorporated into the modeling methodologies developed by the LVA-UNICAMP research team. Different methodologies found in the literature for modeling and propagation of uncertainties will be investigated. In particular, statistical tests will be performed to verify whether topological modes, as suggested in the literature, are indeed more robust than other wave propagation phenomena. (AU)
