Abstract

The present research aims to study the notebooks and diaries of Soviet filmmaker Dziga Vertov (1896-1954), to this day still not published in their integrity. Departing from an analysis of the materials preserved in the "Notebooks and pocketbooks" section of Vertov's archive in the Russian State Archive of Literature and Art (RGALI), the importance of these documents for a better comprehension of the filmmaker's biography and creative trajectory will be discussed. We shall also engage in a genetic critical examination of the two currently available partial editions of these materials: the Soviet collection Stat'i. Dnevniki. Zamysly (Articles. Diaries. Projects, organized by Sergei Drobashenko, 1966) and the German volume Tagebücher/Arbeitshefte (Diaries/Workbooks, organized by Alexandra Gramatke and Thomas Tode, 2000). The final part of this research will consist in a commented selection of Vertov's still unpublished notebooks and diaries, translated from the Russian original.
