Abstract

The fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (J E Smith) (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae), is a polyphagous and cosmopolitan pest and causes damage to economically important crops such as corn, cotton, soybeans, tomatoes, among others. The search for management tools with less impact on the environment has led to the integration of different control tactics, including biological control, based on the use of natural enemies, especially parasitoids. Telenomus remus (Nixon) (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) is an egg parasitoid used almost exclusively to control Spodoptera species and, in addition to S. frugiperda eggs, T. remus develops in Corcyra cephalonica (Stainton) eggs Lepidoptera:Pyralidae), the rice moth, making it a promising alternative host. However, the effectiveness of biological control depends on the integration with other tactics of low impact to these organisms, such as the use of natural substances, including essential oils with insecticidal effects. Thus, the objective was to evaluate the selectivity and effects of essential oils from Syzygium aromaticum, Cymbopogon citratus, Schinusterebinthifolius, Cordia verbenacea, Baccharis dracunculifolia and Callistemon viminalis to the parasitoid T. remus in S. frugiperda eggs. The longevity and parasitism of the parental generation and F1 and the emergence rate and sex ratio of F1 and F2 will be evaluated. The experiment will be carried out in a completely randomized design with seven treatments and eighteen repetitions (one female + one egg pack/per tube). Analysis of variance and means will be compared to 5% significance.(AU)
