Abstract

This project aims to analyze in detail the reception, in Descartes' Les Metéores, of the scholastic tradition represented by the Commentarii Conimbricensis Societatis Iesu. In particular, we take as the main object of analysis the theory of vapors and exhalations and how they are consistent with a theory of mixtures, which, following a tradition originated with Albertus Magnus, would confer unity to the four meteorological treaties found in the corpus Aristotelicum. In this scope, we examine to what degree Descartes followed that idea. The proposed analysis also aims to investigate to what extent problems of conciliation between Meteorologica and works such as Physics and De caelo contributed to a rupture with the philosophy of nature as defended by the scholastic tradition.
