Abstract

"Playing", by Eduardo Coutinho (2007), is the material from which an object is envisaged: the relationship between work and its reader/spectator. Considering the characteristics of that relationship, such as its dubiety in acting between the fictional/non-fictional registers or between inciting individual and collective memories, hypotheses are raised: (a) the aesthetic conformation of the film would depart from the commercial horizon, appealing strategically to consumerism through the identification between the stories which are told and their public - a very common reception (with different effects) in the history of Brazilian cinema such as in the beginning of the 20th century (CONDE, 2018) and in the beginning of the 21st century (MARZOCHI, 2012); (b) the film conformation would undergo, in its commodified fictional aspect, a movement from the fictional to the non-fictional as a manner of searching for aesthetic qualities in the relationship between art and life (JAMESON, 1991; DURÃO, 2015); and (c) the reading of the film would happen ambiguously between the opacity and the transparency of the text in relation to reality, an ambiguity marked by the dissociation of the stories in relation to their external referents (BERNADET, 2013), that is, by a common aesthetic procedure in cinematographic and literary creations. To submit those hypotheses under examination, the specific goals of this research are: (a) describe/analyze the mise-en-scène, the editing and the sound of the film; (b) understand how the tension between the commercial and artistic aspects of the film works through the exploration of the relationship between the fictional and the non-fictional; and (c) present relations between the readings in the cinematographic and literary fields. The contributions to the Literary Studies are connected to a common point of view, highlighting the aesthetic creation and its social reach when the working of such a complex object - involving different languages - is investigated.
