Abstract

At the beginning of the 20th century, the aesthetic use of ordinary and industrial objects, originally made without any artistic intention, extended the possibilities of artistic composition beyond the traditionally used supports, especially painting and sculpture. Marcel Duchamp's ready-mades are the paradigmatic expression of this aestheticization project of everyday objects, with a significant impact on the aesthetic sensitivity of the century. The objective of the research is to investigate this process of artistic rupture that happens through the formal expansion of language repertoires. In particular, study the specific relational configurations that engender successful ruptures in the art world. My hypothesis is that the processes of aesthetic discontinuity are, at the most fundamental level of relationships and interactions, disruptions of a social nature characterized by a relative departure from regions of aesthetic legitimacy. Successful artistic breaks - that is, those responsible for expand the socially shared repertoires of language - would therefore complete two movements of a relational nature: (i) break with the hierarchies of centrality and prestige inherent in the production of traditional art; and (ii) reorganization of the relations in a new axis of centrality, which is essential for the group's agency properties to produce their engagement effects. To investigate the hypotheses, I intend to map the network of relationships that meant/institutionalized/disseminated the ready-made aesthetic project, using an ego-network structure based on the set of correspondences and relations of Marcel Duchamp.
