Abstract

The top quark was the last fermion to be discovered and is the heaviest elementary particle that is known. Its mass is a fundamental parameter of the standard model and the its precise knowledge will be crucial for future precision tests of the theory. The most promising strategy to determine the mass precisely is from the measurement of the cross-section for e+e- --> t bar t close to the threshold, which could be done in future accelerators. In the present project, the student will apply the classic framework to describe this cross-section in leading order and understand how the top quark mass can be determined from this analysis.(AU)
