Abstract

The modeling and design of complex systems involving the interaction of different physical phenomena are some of the main current challenges of mechanical engineering. In this context, it is intended to study, develop, implement and validate methodologies for topology optimization that couple acoustic and structural vibration robustly and efficiently. This will enable its operation in frequency ranges higher than those for which there are already consolidated methodologies. The Bi-directional Evolutionary Structural Optimization (BESO) method for topology optimization will be studied and implemented with segregated acoustic-structure formulations. This combination allows for better treatment of the interface between solid and acoustic domains. The optimization problem is formulated as the maximization of the separation between eigenvalues around a given operating frequency. The main challenges are developing an adequate interpolation between solid and fluid phases and solving the non-hermitian eigenproblem efficiently. This method will apply to various branches of engineering, including the design of acoustic barriers, cloaking devices, and absorbing walls, allowing engineers to create and develop more reliable, innovative, and environmentally friendly structures and machines.
